This years' annual shoe recycling event has come and gone but with it came a new recycling record! In just one week with the help of Dakota County residents and the local textile recyclers, WearEver, we collected 11,883 pounds of shoes to be reused or recycled.
That's the equal to the weight of...
2 full grown giraffes!
Or 8 cows!
What happens to the shoes?
The shoes considered to be in good condition will be reused, and those that are in poor condition will be recycled into different parts. Many recycled shoes turn into running tracks or playground materials! Dakota Valley Recycling would like to extend a huge thank you to all who participated in making this year a record breaking year, and for nearly doubling the amount of shoes collected from last year. Since 2012, we have kept over 78,000 pounds of shoes from entering the landfill. We can't wait to see what's in store for next year!
