Your Participation Makes a Difference

A typical household in the Twin Cities area throws away about 5 lbs. of household organics every day. Burying the material in a landfill is a waste of resources. As a resident of Burnsville's North River Hills neighborhood participating in this program, you reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills, decrease the production of landfill leacheate, reduce wastewater treatment costs from garbage disposal, and recover a valuable resource –compost. Compost is a soil amendment that improves plant growth and restores poor soils. Compost can be used on golf courses, roadside plantings, land reclamation projects, and flower beds.

Organic Waste Goes In Your Yard Waste Container

Separating bagged organic material from the garbage proved to be too expensive to sustain long term. In order to continue collecting organics and have a positive impact on our environment, it is now be collected together with yard waste in the same truck and compost both.

If Waste Management, Inc. currently collects your yard waste, there is no additional fee for this program. If you do not subscribe to the yard waste option, please note there is a small additional fee to participate in this program. Call Waste Management, Inc. at 952-890-1100 and ask for the North River Hills yard waste rate.

Continue to place your household organic materials in the biodegradable bags offered by the City of Burnsville at no charge.  Bags can be picked up from 7am-3:30pm, Monday through Friday, from the Burnsville Maintenance Center at 13713 Frontier Court, Burnsville, MN 55337. [map]

Make sure to use the biodegradable bags and place them inside your yard waste container along with any additional yard waste.  Waste Management, Inc. will pick up the yard waste container weekly as usual from April through November.
