Where can I recycle my plastic bags?

Do you have more plastic shopping bags at home than you can reuse? If so, you’ll be happy to know that several major retailers in the Twin Cities offer plastic bag recycling.

It's in the Bag]
It's in the Bag!

“It’s in the Bag” is a collaborative effort among public and private industry. Shoppers may deposit their clean, dry, empty plastic bags in designated collection bins in stores throughout the metro area. The material is picked up at the stores and sorted by Merrick, Inc., a Twin Cities based non-profit organization providing vocational support and habilitation services to adults with developmental disabilities. The plastic bags are sent to Trex Company in Virginia where it is recycled into a composite lumber typically used in the construction of decks and homes.

Partners include SUPERVALU, Byerly’s, Cub Foods, Kowalski’s Markets, Lunds, Trex Company, Merrick, Inc., Minnesota Waste Wise, and Hennepin County. Additional funding was provided by the Minnesota Grocer’s Education Foundation, the American Plastics Council, Minneapolis Star Tribune, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Target Corporation and GreenGuardian.com.
